My pet theory concerns Ginny. Normally I am not particularly fond of Ginny, as my impression of her before I got into fandom was 'Ron's little sister, has an immature crush on Harry, has pretty much failed to distinguish herself otherwise' and I got pretty irritated at all the fanfic authors who turned her into Mary Sue and made her solve all Harry's problems.
This influenced my view of the character, especially when said authors were actually pretty good and made me like their versions of her. But I didn't forget that I originally hadn't thought much of her, and that made me distrust myself when I tried to apply the characterization of fanon Ginny to the 'real' canon Ginny. True, OotP seemed to give her some of the additional character that fans other than me had anticipated, but I still just couldn't become enthralled by her. I don't hate or even dislike her, she's just not one of my favorites.
BUT. There is one thing that I would really love to see in a Ginny fic, or, dare I hope, in canon. And that is Parseltoungue. I think there's a very good chance that Ginny got it from Tom the same way Harry got it from Voldemort.
Compare, if you will, these two quotes from CoS:
Tom to Harry: "Powerful enough to start feeding Miss Weasley a few of my secrets, to start pouring a little of my soul back into her . . ."
Dumbledore to Harry: " . . .'he transferred some of his own powers to you the night he gave you that scar. Not something he intended to do, I'm sure . . .'
'Voldemort put a bit of himself in me?' Harry said, thunderstruck."
Seems a very similar kind of thing to me. And Tom would need Ginny to be able to speak Parseltoungue, more than almost anything else.
To take the parallel further, we have two situations where he's dying, and in one we know he transferred the power permanently, so what's to say he didn't in the other, too? And before you ask, no, it wouldn't have gone to Harry the second time just because Harry killed him. It would have gone to Ginny because he was magically linked with her, as Harry and Voldemort magically linked with the scar.
Am I making sense?
Anyway, I have been on the lookout for a fanfic featuring this since practically forever. I came up with it on my own, and at first I was expecting that others would have come to the same conclusion and written lots and lots of fics about it, but nope. There have been a couple of hints that maybe I'm not alone, including a WIP way back in the Schnoogle days in which Ginny acted weirdly when Harry spoke Parseltoungue on the H. Express, but it never got finished (to my knowledge) and I haven't found much else.
So, my question is . . . Has anyone else seen anything? Heard anything? Written anything? Thought it up themselves and never said anything?
Is the idea even plausible? Or am I totally crazy?
