The big drawback of Mastodon (apart from only getting 500 characters per utterance, ugh) is that your identity isn't portable like it is in Hubzilla. Sure, you can interact with people other places, but you can't just pick yourself and your history up and move to another instance, so if your server mod gets tired of running a server, you're SOL and starting from scratch. Hubzilla lets you move to any other Hubzilla instance you want and all your stuff copies over and stays updated in both places, or in multiple places. Hubzilla also has way more features.
