The thing that sets Hubzilla ahead of the rest of the fediverse like Mastodon et alia is that it has something called "nomadic identity," which means users aren't bound to a single hub or instance. They can register simultaneously at multiple servers, so if one or more go down, they'll still be able to continue on the others. This means servers don't have to be huge or last indefinitely, putting them well within individual fan capability, or small pooled-resources type arrangements.

But also, because Hubzilla is part of the fediverse, someone with an account on Hubzilla can be followed by or share a post from someone on Mastodon or Pixelfed or any of the other growing fediverse options. It's very easy to interact across platforms, but also easy to control your privacy setting for who sees what.
The main problem with it right now, in fact, is just that there're so many settings most of them are tucked away by default and it's not always easy or intuitive to use. But that's just customization, that's totally fixable!
